Street Lighting

Henderson Municipal Power and Light (HMP&L) has provided street lighting for the citizens of Henderson for many years with the first 154 arc lamps that were installed in 1896 and that were later replaced by more popular electric incandescent lamps. Over time, incandescent bulbs gave way to mercury vapor lights, sodium vapor lights, then fluorescent technology, and today’s light emitting diode (LED) technology. LED lights use less energy, are longer lasting, and provide a broader spectrum of light. LED lighting more closely imitates natural sunlight, so the human eye responds better with correct color rendering. LEDs are also much more directional so more of the light energy is shown on the roadway and not projected out. Directionality means that the glare spreading out from the light is reduced, and they are naturally dark sky friendly. In short, the light from LEDs provide more accurate color representation when compared to natural sunlight.
